Welcome to

Barrelhouse Statia

About the building

The building, currently under the name of Barrel House, was erected in the first half of the eighteenth century, differentiating the structure from most other ruins that are visible alongside the bay today. At that time, Sint Eustatius’ coastal strip functioned as a mercantile hub. Indirect data led to the theory that part of the building functioned as the headquarters of the Dutch West India Company while another part served as a warehouse and later on as a commercial space. To construct the building it is believed that the West India Company took the best quality bricks from the Vecht area in the Netherlands and brought them to Statia as ballast in ships.
